Algona Municipal Utilities exists because at three separate times in our history, the citizens demanded that that their Utility services be delivered by a local community owned entity — Water in 1889, Electric in 1898 and Telecommunications in 1997. They expect a high level of service and we are honor-bound to provide it.

Algona Municipal Utilities employs an experienced, dedicated workforce of 36 employees.  Once hired, many employees spend the rest of their working career at AMU.  Over half of our employees have been working with us for more than 15 years.

AMU is a small company – we get the opportunity to wear different hats and be involved in different aspects of the utility business.  We have few employees with a limited or narrow scope of expertise, instead, our employees have broad exposure to departmental operations. 

For new employees, we offer the best of both worlds.  The ability to work with experienced employees who are willing to share their knowledge and expertise with others, and an environment where new experiences and ideas are welcome.  Many of our long-term employees are or will be retiring within the next 10 years.  When looking for the right candidates to join our team, we look for a strong work ethic, for the right attitude, and for the aptitude to advance.
