History of the Board of Trustees
The Algona City Council governed the electric and water utilities until 1951. Due to developments occurring in the utilities industry and ever increasing demands of running the utilities business, a separate Board of Trustees for Algona Municipal Utilities was proposed. Following a referendum, the board was established in June of 1951
The initial three-person Board of Trustees included M. Joseph Bradley, Glenn S. Buchanan, and C.R. McQuiston. T. James Palmer was the superintendent of the utilities. The board was expanded to a five person board in the late 1970s.
Allen K. Buchanan succeeded his father Glen Buchanan, and is the longest serving member of the Board. His term of office started in 1953 and continued until his resignation in 1997.
